Like the iPhone X, both of the latest models have Face ID, which was introduced last year as a revolution in smartphone security and is now taken for granted. To accommodate this scanner, I decided to keep the cutout at the top of the front panel, which was so criticized after last year's presentation.

However, Apple heeded another request from the fans and for the first time in the history of the company added the function of two SIM cards in their smartphones.

It is worth noting that the ability to carry two SIM cards in one phone was implemented in Android gadgets for a long time, but Apple seemed to prefer not to notice this largely useful feature.

As for innovations. One of the first to be announced was increased water protection thanks to the heavy-duty glass that iPhones are dressed in. Now the gadget will be able to survive under water at a depth of two meters for about 30 minutes before the owner notices that he drowned him. Kupertinovtsy promise that the “drowned man” can now be dried, and he will work as if nothing had happened.

The camera received another update and new features, which the owner will only “play” with in the first couple of days after purchase. A variety of effects will clearly be of interest to the photographer, but for the average person they will most likely remain a rudimentary "feature", the cost of which will be included in the final price of the iPhone.

Apple introduced three new iPhones. In this review, we will look at the key characteristics of new products, discuss prices and dates for the devices to go on sale. At the same time, let's figure out what happened to the story with two SIM-cards. Go!

This time, the Apple 2018 presentation did without big words and incredible numbers. We immediately started announcing new products: Apple Watch, about which has long been published, and three new iPhones.

What exactly was presented?

Last year, three new iPhones were shown at once. This fall, the situation has not changed. We still have three new items and mess in the head. But let's try to figure it out.

Or the cheaper iPhone turned into the iPhone XR. For this branch of smartphones, a real revolution has happened. Huge, bezel-less screen new processor, pumped battery, portrait mode in the camera and a bunch of new colors. Just a bomb!

Until recently, the flagship got a successor - the iPhone XS. The same size, but more pumped smartphone for the same money.

But s jumped over everyone and turned into the iPhone XS Max. The same features as the XS, only with a huge screen and more pleasant autonomy.

And now in more detail. Let's go through the chronology of the presentation.

iPhone XS

Successor and star of the program. It costs a thousand dollars in the base, like the previous ten.

Design

Its main feature remained in place. The 5.8-inch screen retained its previous resolution of 2436 by 1125 pixels, which gives a density of 458 dpi.

Of course, an OLED matrix is ​​​​used. As always, the best. Contrast ratio 1,000,000:1, brightness 625 nits, True Tone, support for HDR10, Dolby Vision, P3 profile, 3D Touch - everything that was before is in place.

It is reported that the glass front and rear is now even stronger. And coupled with surgical steel, the device received protection against water according to the IP68 standard, which means immersion in water up to 2 meters and for 30 minutes. We were told right from the stage that if you dropped your smartphone into the pool, then it's okay. Nothing will happen to the device. You can also pour juice or beer over the novelty. Again, no problem.

By the way, it was IP67.

As expected, a new color was introduced - gold. It looks fresh, expensive and solid. As required from the new colors.

Of course, inside we are waiting for the new A12 Bionic processor, which is now created using a 7-nanometer process technology. It used to be 10 nm. This means more efficient power consumption and increased performance. In numbers, the situation looks like this:

• 2 performance cores are 15% faster and 40% more power efficient
• 4 regular cores show the same performance, but now consume 50% less energy
• 4-core graphics accelerator overclocked one and a half times

In addition, the new chipset includes an 8-core neural unit responsible for machine learning.

Another interesting number. Thanks to the 8-core neural block, the new “stone” is capable of processing up to 5 trillion operations. A11 Bionic boasted a ceiling of 600 billion operations. In addition, the Neural Engine thanks to the Core ML platform is up to 9 times faster than the corresponding system in the A11 Bionic. At the same time, the neural block consumes 10 times less energy.

cameras

Compared to the top ten, the new smartphone has not received a change in numbers. Rear mounted modules of 12 megapixels each. The six-element lens boasts an aperture of f/1.8 for a regular lens and f/2.4 for telephoto. In addition, there is a double optical stabilization.

With exactly the same numbers, Apple claims that image quality has improved. This is facilitated by several new technologies.

Take at least Smart HDR, on the conscience of which the improved processing of light and dark areas in the pictures. In addition, the algorithms have learned to more accurately determine the depth of field in portrait mode. For this, the “Depth” function or a variable aperture is also used: from f / 1.4 to f / 16 - any value. You can adjust the degree of blur both directly in the process of shooting, and after, in the Photos application.

Let me remind you that up to this point, a variable aperture has only been found in samsung galaxy S9, and . Moreover, in Korean flagships, the physical aperture blades are responsible for this, which either narrow or open. How things are in the iPhone XS is still unknown. Most likely, the software is responsible for the process.

In addition, "Depth" is available for the front TrueDepth camera.

Regarding video recording, the improvements are purely evolutionary. More detailed study of dark areas, improved picture in low light and finally stereo sound recording. Surprisingly, until recently, no iPhone could write stereo. This gap has now been closed.

Rest

Let's just list a few more new features:

But do not rush to rejoice. The first "sim card" will be the familiar Nano SIM. But the role of the second is played by eSIM or digital SIM card.

The only country in the world where there will be two slots for two real SIM cards is China. Russia and other regions in flight. Although, perhaps, some impudent deputy will demand that Apple change the situation. If anything, I didn't hint anything to anyone.

iPhone XS Max

We look at the most expensive and fancy device, and at the same time we determine how it differs from the iPhone XS. The main difference was a huge, frameless screen of 6.5 inches.

For such a diagonal, engineers had to increase the resolution to 2688 x 1242 pixels. However, in total they give a density of the same 458 pixels per inch.

This is where the differences between the Max version and the regular XS end. Well, except for a slightly upgraded battery life and prices. About the latter later.

iPhone XR

This is a smartphone, so to speak, entry-level. The most affordable, with the latest filling, now with a frameless screen, Face ID, a new processor and a relatively compact body. Despite the 6.1-inch LCD panel.

A whole bunch of new colors suggest a repeat of the iPhone 5C experience? bad experience. I am sure that a new run with a bunch of colors at the start will be much more successful. Below in the photo, by the way, all available colors. There are a lot of them, they are all bright and juicy.

It's a little disappointing that an IPS screen was placed in the smartphone, and not AMOLED, as in older brothers. Nevertheless, actual buns, among which, for example, True Tone, P3 profile are still announced.

Like more sophisticated relatives, XR received a top-end processor. And I bet in advance that this particular smartphone will become the most productive in the history of the company. The situation is repeated with when the device received a powerful processor, but a noticeably smaller number of pixels for processing them. Hence the superiority, which, however, is noticeable only in synthetic tests.

One camera is installed at the back, but “completely new”:

• optical stabilization

Most importantly, even with a single camera, portrait mode is now available. Now, those who want to save money will not be left out of modern photo technologies. This makes me happy.

The front camera also knows how to blur the background, moreover, like all other smartphones with the effects of daylight, studio and contour light. Depth mode in place.

It is also important to mention autonomy. The novelty lives for an hour and a half more than. Decent score.

And yes, the new iPhone XS Max has become the heaviest smartphone from Apple, but still not the largest. still occupies the place of honor of the "shovel" in the family.

The new iPhone Xs Max is the same size as the regular iPhone Plus, but by reducing the bezels, it has a larger screen - 6.5 inches, the largest in the history of Apple smartphones. The battery lasts an hour and a half longer than the iPhone X otherwise specifications same as XS. The model is also available in three colors.

* Both models support two SIM cards, but two slots will only be on smartphones for the Chinese market. In other countries, a version with a virtual eSIM will be available (this function is not yet available in Russia).

"Budget" iPhone XR

A simpler version was called the iPhone XR - unlike older models, it has an LCD screen instead of OLED, a single camera like on the iPhone 8 and an aluminum body. But the processor is the same as in the flagships - A12 Bionic. Available 6.1-inch smartphone already in six colors: white, black, blue, yellow, coral and red.

New Apple Watch

The screen of Apple Watch Series 4 has increased by 30%, and the case has become significantly thinner, while the size of the case has not changed much. The watch has a built-in heart rate sensor, with which they can monitor the heart rate and build electrocardiograms (a feature available only in the United States). In addition, Apple Watch has learned to detect the fall of the owner. In the event that you fall and do not move, then in a minute the watch will call the rescue service or send information to your emergency contact.

Apple Watch Series 4 will be powered by a new version operating system watchOS 5 (released Sept. 27) with new workout types, Walkie-Talkie messaging, podcast support, smart Siri, and Shortcuts.

Everything we know about the 2019 iPhone - XI / XT / 11

release date

Apple announced the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR on September 12, 2018, but the release dates for these models differed. So, the iPhone XS and XS Max were available for pre-order from September 14 and went on sale on September 21. At the same time, pre-orders for the iPhone XR only opened on October 19, and the release took place a week later, on October 26.

If Apple sticks to its usual schedule, the presentation of the new iPhones will take place on Tuesday, September 10th. Pre-orders are likely to open on September 13, and new items will go on sale on September 20.

Name

Apple deviated from the usual naming scheme in 2017 when it announced the iPhone X (as “iPhone ten”), then in 2018 we got the iPhone XS and iPhone XR (“iPhone ten es” and “iPhone ten er”, respectively). That is, Apple went from the iPhone 8 straight to the iPhone XR, and we never saw the iPhone 9.

Given the appearance of X in the names, it has become more difficult to guess what the 2019 iPhones will be called. iPhone XI or iPhone 11 (and, accordingly, iPhone XI Max or iPhone 11 Max) are the most likely, but the name of the updated iPhone XR remains a mystery.

Less popular options include the iPhone XT and simply a "new iPhone" that does away with numbering entirely (as the company now does with standard iPads).

At the same time, Apple may choose a completely new name, as was the case with the iPhone X, and due to the fact that only code names are used in production and commercial names are never disclosed, it is pointless to expect secrets from insiders here.

Design: notch or not notch?

Most analysts agree that the design of the flagship model will remain the same as in the iPhone XS. And this means that the notch that appeared in 2017 and migrated to 2018 iPhones will remain with us in 2019.

But the notch itself is likely to decrease.

A report published by ETNews says that Apple has done a lot of work to bring the front camera and Face ID components together as much as possible. Thanks to this, the engineers were able to reduce the size of the modules and sensors located at the top of the display and reduce the size of the notch.

Or maybe a recess in general down with? This, of course, is unlikely, but the chances are still not zero.

Hopes for this appeared in March 2018, when Apple patented a smartphone design without a notch in the display. Interestingly, in the patent description, Apple acknowledges that front-facing camera modules integrated into the display may be “aesthetically unappealing.”

After that, the Dutch blog MobileKopen discovered another patent describing a way to place camera modules and Face ID sensors in holes in the display. In January, AMS, a supplier of Face ID components, announced a technology that can reduce the size of the notch. Of all the above, most likely, it is the latest development that will be used in the 2019 iPhone.

Specifications for iPhone XI and iPhone XI Max

Apart from the design changes, the new generation of iPhone is also expected to be the most powerful ever. In particular, we are waiting for a new processor, next-generation cameras, improved performance and energy efficiency, and possibly a new connector and support for Apple Pencil.

Display

Over the past few years, Apple has been working with various OLED display manufacturers to rely less on Samsung. It is this South Korean company that supplies displays for Phone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. In particular, Apple considered the possibility of cooperation with Japan Display, and also stimulated LG Display to develop the OLED division, and also purchased equipment for the production of such displays in Taiwan.

Apple is reportedly planning to phase out LCD altogether and equip even lower-end models with OLED displays, but it is not known if this will happen in 2019 as OLED is still quite expensive to manufacture. Rumors are divided: someone claims that this year we will see LCD in the younger model, someone says that OLED will rule the show already in this generation.

One way or another, the flagship iPhone XI (or whatever Apple calls it) will definitely get an OLED display, and, most likely, even thinner and lighter than the iPhone XS, thanks to Samsung's Y-OCTA technology, which integrates the touchscreen into the display itself. It is unlikely that this will have a strong effect on the thickness, since these displays were not thick anyway, but Apple is attracted to this technology, including as a way to reduce the cost of production.

As for 3D Touch, it was not in last year's iPhone XR and there is information that in 2019 it will not be in any of the models. This was announced by Blaine Curtis, an analyst at Barclays. The Wall Street Journal agreed with him and added that all three 2019 iPhones are likely to “inherit” the technology introduced with the iPhone XR.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted that 3D Touch will disappear from iPhones because it increases the cost of devices, but at the same time does not add enough new functionality and is not very popular.

Processor A13

Apple has been working with Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC) for several years to develop new processors for the iPhone, and it doesn't look like the pattern will change this year. Industry analysts back in August 2018 reported that Apple had signed a contract to supply processors for the next generation of iPhones exclusively with TSMC.

Little is known about the Apple A13 yet, other than that it will be made on a 7nm process with ultraviolet lithography and will be even more powerful than the Apple A12 Bionic in the iPhone XS and XS Max. On top of the standard improvements in overall performance and graphics power, we're also expecting another leap in machine learning with Apple's Neural Engine to power the next generation of AR apps.

There will be no 5G (but there will be Wi-Fi 6)

Although some manufacturers will launch their first 5G smartphones this year - including Samsung, LG and OnePlus - it seems that Apple will once again not be in a rush to innovate. A Bloomberg report shows that we likely won't see 5G support in iPhones until 2020. And this can hardly be called critical, because in 2019, operators are just starting to deploy 5G infrastructure, and it will not be possible to catch 5G everywhere, even if your smartphone can work in these networks.

On the other hand, the 2019 iPhone is Wi-Fi 6, which will provide more fast internet already now, and not when Russian operators finally prepare the 5G network for operation.

As already mentioned, the appearance of the iPhone XI will be practically no different from last year's iPhone XS, but the devil, as they say, is in the details. In particular, one of the three iPhones in 2019 (most likely, we are talking about the updated iPhone XS Max) will have a camera. And this, surprisingly, is a problem, since Apple's triple cameras look, at least, unusual:

Luckily, leaker @OnLeaks has reported that Apple itself has not yet decided on the design of this year's flagship, and two prototypes are being developed in parallel, of which only one will be used in the final product. He also attached a render of the second design, which, to be honest, looks much more ergonomic than the square module version:

Either way, it's obvious that Apple will have a hard time convincing users that this smartphone, with the design we're seeing for the third year in a row, is truly innovative. Therefore, playing on visual differences (especially as catchy as a square camera) and an additional lens for better pictures and videos is a great marketing ploy.

At the same time, the regular iPhone XI will get a dual camera like its predecessor, but the sensor itself will be better. So, the Indian site CompareRaja, what resolution will the lenses of the “regular” iPhone XI have: 14 and 10 megapixels. Since Apple previously relied on a 12-megapixel main module, the new camera will really be able to show top scores. The characteristics of the third module in the iPhone XI Max have not yet been disclosed.

According to The Korea Herald, Apple is “considering” adding Apple Pencil support to the next generation iPhone. This is also reported by another South Korean publication, The Investor (however, its authority is much more controversial compared to THH). However, Kuo also reported that Apple Pencil support is possible in the iPhone 2019. Note that it is possible that only the iPhone XI Max will receive stylus support - just like Samsung adds S Pen only to the Note series flagships.

USB-C instead of Lightning?

Jean Baptiste Su, an analyst at Atherton Research, believes that Apple will ditch Lightning and move to a USB-C port in new iPhones, as it already did with the 2018 iPad Pro. However, rumors about this are quite contradictory.

So, the Japanese site Mac Otakara also believes that the iPhone 2019 could potentially get a USB-C port, based on data from insiders. For now, Apple can still change the decision about which port to use in new models, so the situation here is the same as in the case of the location of the camera modules in the iPhone XI Max.
